Mission Statement

The Medical/Surgical Unit is a team of nursing professionals who strive to deliver compassionate, appropriate and cost-effective care for all patients to accomplish the mission of the Lompoc Healthcare District.

Scope of Service

The Medical/Surgical Unit has 38 beds and provides care for adult and pediatric patients with medical and surgical diagnosis.

Telemetry, observation, short stay and outpatient transfusion patients are placed on this unit. The average census is 22. The Medical Surgical Unit operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Nursing Care is individualized for each patient and includes assessment and reassessment of the patient and significant other in the physical, psychological and cognitive domain in all phases of patient care, planning for care after identifying needs from the assessment including coordination with appropriate disciplines required for patient/family during hospitalization and at discharge, implementing and documenting the plan of care, evaluating the patient's response to medical and nursing interventions, and working with the patient/family, physician and other health care providers to assure the discharge plan is best fitted to the assessed needs.

Staff of the department consists of Registered Nurses, Licensed Vocational Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants and Ward Clerks. The patient classification system is utilized as a tool for staffing in conjunction with the unit director, supervisor and staff input. RN's, LVN's assess their patients acuity once each shift and the staffing assistant and the unit director or supervisor determine staffing needs for the next shift based on an appropriate and realistic mix of patients and personnel.

The Department is committed to follow laws and regulations established by the California Nurse Practice Act, the JCAHO, the Title 22 State Regulations, the Lippincott Manual of Nursing and the Nursing Policy and Procedure Manual of Lompoc District Hospital.
