The Importance of Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States. Early detection plays a key role in preventing breast cancer death and improving treatment outcomes. A mammogram is the most common screening exam for breast cancer. The exam evaluates breast tissue for any abnormalities, including cysts, other benign abnormalities, or malignancies.

When to Get Screened

The most lives are saved from breast cancer when women get a mammogram screening every year, starting at age 40, even if they do not have any noticeable symptoms or a family history of breast cancer. Annual mammograms can detect cancer early, which is when it is most treatable.

Update on Breast Cancer Screening Recommendations Inclusive of All Women at Average RISK from the JACR:

  • All women should have a risk assessment by age 30.
    • This ensures that you are not in a higher risk category.
  • Starting at age 40, all women should start annual mammography screening.
    • Greatest breast cancer mortality reduction.
    • Diagnosis at an earlier stage.
    • Better surgical options and more effective chemotherapy.
  • Age 74+, screening should continue.
    • No upper age limit unless severe comorbidities limit life expectancy.

Benefits should be considered along with the possibility of:

  • Recall for additional imaging.
