At Lompoc Valley Medical Center, we are devoted to helping women lead long, healthy lives. We have the latest state-of-the-art equipment for performing digital mammography. Mammography is a special type of imaging that uses small doses of X-ray radiation to find breast cancer in its earliest stages. Mammograms utilize specialized equipment to effectively record images of breast tissue that will record small abnormalities before you notice symptoms.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States. Early detection plays a key role in preventing breast cancer death and improving treatment outcomes. A mammogram is the most common screening exam for breast cancer. The exam evaluates breast tissue for any abnormalities, including cysts, other benign abnormalities, or malignancies.
The most lives are saved from breast cancer when women get a mammogram screening every year, starting at age 40, even if they do not have any noticeable symptoms or a family history of breast cancer. Annual mammograms can detect cancer early, which is when it is most treatable.
