Lompoc Valley Medical Center
Lompoc Valley Medical Center (LVMC), formerly known as Lompoc Healthcare District, was the first operating healthcare district hospital established in California and was created in 1946 by the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors. The 463-square-mile district includes the city of Lompoc, Mission Hills, Mesa Oaks, Vandenberg Village, a portion of Vandenberg Air Force Base and the area east toward Buellton.
In 1945, the CA State Legislature enacted the "Local Hospital Care District Law" which authorized these districts to build and operate hospitals and other healthcare facilities in underserved areas and to recruit and support physicians. The healthcare district is governed by a locally elected five-member board of directors. Healthcare districts are also subject to state policies and regulations as applied by each county.
