Where do you volunteer: I volunteer as a coach for the San Francisco Junior Giants through the Lompoc Recreation and Parks Department.
How long have you volunteered? Four summers
Why do you volunteer?
I love the San Francisco Junior Giants program because it's free for the community. This gives parents a chance to have their children participate in a team sport without having to worry about the cost. The Jr. Giants program holds fundraisers and does glove drives throughout the year, so each child who participates receives a shirt, hat, and a glove if needed, free of charge.
In most cases, this is the only opportunity many children have to be part of a team. I also love that this program is not just about the fundamentals of baseball, but that it is centered around the values of the Jr. Giants organization. Each week, we practice value and relate that to the practice for the day. For example, last summer I coached T-Ball and for the week we learned about “confidence,” we did a drill where the kids ran as fast as they could through the 1st base. Once they got there, the kids had to strike a confident pose. They loved it! It is so much fun and it gives children a place to learn about Integrity, Confidence, Teamwork, and Leadership. I love that I get an opportunity to create a safe place to teach these kids about values, and in a way that involves baseball. I think they absorb more when we are acting out confidence, and showing what a good leader does than they do just reading or hearing about it.
