Art Baumach had a very busy professional career, rising in the corporate ranks o the aerospace industry and traveling all over the world. When he retired, he suddenly had free time. “I didn’t want to sit around doing nothing when I retired,” he said. “I like to help people.”

When the “new” Lompoc hospital opened eight years ago, volunteers were sought to help out in registration and the medical-surgical waiting room. His partner, Jackie Melone, volunteers during the same two-hour shift, staffing the registration desk while he’s in the waiting room.

“I think it’s my obligation to volunteer,” Art said. “I’ve gotten a lot from life and I try to give it back.”
