What is chemotherapy?
LVMC's Hematology-Oncology Service specializes in Medical oncology, often referred to as chemotherapy. Our treatments use anti-cancer drugs to kill or reduce cancer cells. Chemotherapy often is used in conjunction with radiation therapy and/or surgery to stop or slow the growth of cancer cells in the body. These drugs are given through an injection or IV into a vein and travel throughout the body. It is this systemic aspect of chemo treatments that often causes side effects, including hair loss fatigue, nausea, and other symptoms in some patients more than others. Modern drugs and approaches have diminished these effects allowing many patients to lead relatively normal lives during therapy.
