Temperatures are up, the sun is out and we are all ready to begin enjoying our favorite outdoor activities for summer. During these long days, the average person will spend more time outside exposing themselves to ultraviolet (UV) rays. These rays damage the structure of our skin cells and cause damage to the connective tissues increasing your risk of cancer. With that it in mind, it is important to understand the risks and protective measures to take while enjoying the summer.
Skin cancer is commonly caused by overexposure to ultraviolet rays through sunlight, tanning beds or lamps, and is the leading form of cancer in the United States. Just 15 minutes of sun exposure can begin to have damaging effects on your skin. Cancer is the most significant risk of sun exposure, but other health risks are also associated with UV exposure such as visual conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration. Too much exposure to these rays can also weaken your immune system.
