Healthy Recipe: The Marinade
This marinade recipe is frequently used at my own home. We call it ‘The Marinade’. When I put it together, I make a triple batch every time. Then I store it for up to two weeks in my fridge, in an airtight container such as an old sauce jar.
Keep it Cool this Summer
In the Lompoc Valley, residents are more apt to start worrying about high temperatures in the fall, when our area traditionally sees the mercury climb in September and October.
School is out now, Flower Festival is around the corner, and word comes that temperatures are expected to be on the rise in the next few days.

Sleep, One of the Great Mysteries
Sleep is one of the great mysteries of neuroscience. Like the origin of the universe is for the astrophysicist, sleep has puzzled brilliant minds since antiquity. Ancient Greece prayed to the sleep god Hypnos to restore their bodies and minds. Hypnos is where we get the word hypnosis. The Romans had their own sleep god, Somnus, from which we get the word somnolence (sleepiness). We no longer pray to sleep gods, but we remain zealots in our desire for the restorative powers of sleep.
Healthy Recipe: Cannellini Bean Salad
Yield: 1 pint
Time: 15 minutes
- 1 cannellini beans, 14 oz can
- 2 green onions, finely sliced
- 1 tsp lemon, zest & juice each
- 1 tbsp Italian parsley, chopped
- 1 pinch rosemary, finely chopped
- 1 tsp olive oil
- Salt - to taste
- Pepper - to taste
- Drain & rinse beans - dry on sheet paper towel.
- In a bowl, gently combine all ingredients.
- Taste & adjust seasoning as needed.
- Allow to sit for at least 30 minutes so flavor can meld.
