Erin Holt started out her career path in Child Development and quickly learned that it wasn’t the job for her. The Lompoc native and 1976 graduate of Lompoc High said she had friends who were nurses, who encouraged her to consider the medical field.

So she made the decision to leave behind child development for a career as a Licensed Vocational Nurse. And it stuck – for the past 32 years Erin has worked with patients and physicians at the former Valley Medical Group – now Lompoc Valley Medical Center: Physician Services -- on Third Street. “It’s rewarding work,” she says. “I think I’m good at it. I’m confident in my ability.”

She finds an easy camaraderie with the staff at the clinic and has been there long enough that she is now taking care of the offspring of adults she once treated when they were children. “That’s kind of a neat feeling,” Erin says. “When I helped the first baby (of a former childhood patient), I got goosebumps.”

She works the noon to 7 p.m. shift most days, alongside Physician Assistant Ken Hyman. As for being an LVN, Erin says she wanted to help people before they ended up in the acute hospital.

“I want to educate them to make lifestyle changes to keep them from being an inpatient,” she said. Working in the town in which she was born is important to her.

“Providing care in Lompoc holds us accountable,” Erin says. “You have to treat people well. You see people all over town. That holds you to a high standard of care. We are providing care to our friends and neighbors. I like that.”
