Working with Dr. David Cortese at LVMC: Physician Services, Medical Assistant Emely Suarez is getting a first-hand look at the world of orthopedic surgery.
On the job for just a few months, the 2017 Lompoc High School graduate is responsible for scheduling patients, taking preliminary vital signs and coordinating with Dr. Cortese about other patient needs. She’s been interested in the medical field since participating in Lompoc High’s Health and Wellness Careers (HAWC) Academy. She attended the Center for Employment Training in Santa Maria to become a Medical Assistant.
“I like seeing all the patients and how they feel after a fracture is fixed, or they have surgery. I like to see the smile on their faces.”
During her schooling, Emely completed her externship hours at Physician Services.
“Everybody was so nice to me,” she says. “They still are … This office is family-oriented. That’s what I like about it.”
In her job, she said she helps everyone from young children to the elderly, with everything from bone breaks to arthritis issues.
“Every time Dr. Cortese does a surgery or works with a patient, he shows me the comparison (in X-rays or scans). It’s so cool to see the bones broken in two and then put back together and healing in a couple weeks or a month.”
