The U.S. has seen a steep increase in the problem of substance abuse and alcoholism not only by civilians but by veterans and active duty military as well.
The Department of Defense has a strict zero-tolerance policy for drug use. But the trauma experienced during combat or prolonged deployments, as well as military sexual abuse and work-related injuries, has contributed to the rise in overuse of prescription medicine and illegal drugs.
Veterans and active duty members also struggle with high rates of tobacco addiction and alcoholism.
