Labor and Delivery Ward Clerk recognized for her Exceptional Care

Congratulations to Labor and Delivery Ward Clerk Sherrie Chambliss on receiving the “BEE” Award for “Being Exceptional Everyday.”
The BEE honors patient care non-nursing staff who assist a nurse or a patient and his or her family in delivering excellent patient care. The non-nursing staff can include registration staff, patient financial services, Environmental Services, Information Services, Health Information Management, Dietary and more.

Sherrie was nominated by Chief Nursing Officer Melinda DeHoyos. The nomination involved Sherrie’s interactions with a patient who was struggling with addiction and was going through the recovery process.

“She delivered her baby and expressed that she wanted to do the best she could for her new baby and lead a better life,” the nomination noted. “She struggled with keeping all her appointments organized and wanted to do her best to not miss any necessary meeting or appointments for the success of her future.”

Sherrie listened to the patient and asked for permission to take an early lunch to buy a planner for the patient to help her stay organized for upcoming appointments. She then helped the patient get the information plotted prior to discharge.

“Because of staff like Sherrie, we are able to provide the most compassionate and special care for our LVMC patients,” the nomination stated. “Thank you, Sherrie, for helping our patients be the best they can be and in this case, helping our patient lead a better life for her and her new baby.”
Sherrie has worked for LVMC and Lompoc Health for six years and previously worked for 11 years with Sansum Clinic. She was also instrumental in the hospital’s Covid-19 vaccine public clinic and has been in the Labor and Delivery department since 2021.

The patient she helped “wanted to help herself and we wanted to encourage and support her in what she was doing,” Sherrie said of the patient.
She loves coming to work every day.

“I think that this job is amazing,” she said. “I get to be part of most people’s happiest day of their life. I get to see the miracle of life every day. It’s a blessing for sure. I don’t want to take it for granted, that every day I’m seeing that.”

The BEE nominations follow the “PETALS” principles, for the employee showing passion/compassion in the care they provide; establishing a special connection using kindness and providing emotional support; showing teamwork; always creating the best experience; love for their job and showing respect.

Sherrie was presented with a special statue to commemorate her award, as well as a Bee-themed badge holder.
